I have very often found that it is assumed that buying an acoustic guitar is the logical first step; however this is not always the case.
In terms of playing scales, chords, co-ordination exercises and theory, there can be little or no difference between learning on an acoustic and learning on an electric. In fact learning on an electric guitar can be physically easier for children as the strings are generally lighter and closer to the fret board, therefore easier to hold. This is a very important factor to consider.
However if an individual prefers the sound of an acoustic guitar and aspires to play acoustic ballads and musical pieces, then this must be the overriding factor.
Once you have decided whether to go for an acoustic or an electric guitar the next thing to establish is your budget. With this in mind I would suggest visiting three or four music stores and trying out as many different guitars in your price range as possible. When in music stores it is always worth looking slightly above your budget also, as you may be able to find the same model guitar elsewhere at a better price.
Guitars of the same model and made by the same manufacturer can vary in tone and resonance though, due the actual piece of wood selected for the instrument and this needs to be considered.
When looking at electric guitars there is also the consideration in terms of the type of pickups fitted, the presence or not of a vibrato arm, the type of bridge and the sound you require based upon your personal taste in music.
