A guitar set up is the guitar equivalent of taking your car to a mechanic for a service and tune up.
Personal preference is a large factor when considering how to set up your guitar, for example a slide player may prefer a heavy gauge string and a high fretboard action where a metal player or a shredder may like low action and thinner strings.
A setup will usually involve the following guitar maintenance components:
- Adjusting the bridge
- Adjusting the nut
- Making sure your pickups are secure
- Adjusting the truss rod
- Adjusting intonation
- Restringing your guitar
- Polishing and cleaning
